Russia and Armenia are scrutinizing the prospects for agricultural cooperation

October 24. During the official visit of Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev to the Republic of Armenia, the Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation Alexander Tkachev held a working meeting with the Armenian Minister of Agriculture Ignat Arakelyan.

The parties touched upon the status quo and the prospects for further strengthening the agricooperation between Russia and Armenia. Alexander Tkachev noted well positive dynamics of bilateral agritrade. Thus, for 8 months of 2017 the trade turnover between the two countries increased by 26%. Exports to Armenia increased by 25% mostly through poultry meat, wheat, sugar, margarine, sunflower, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages procurement.
“Today, Russian exports grows steadily. Within the priority agriexport project we are promoting our agrigoods to the international market, being quite ready to supply our partners with a variety of agricultural products of the highest quality”, the minister proclaimed, emphasizing that Russian exporters are interested in expansion with sugar, sunflower oil and livestock products.
The parties shared their insights on implementation of joint greenhouse projects. Russian business supports the construction of greenhouse complexes of more than 100 hectares in area, augmenting thus the Armenian greenhouse sector by a quarter. At present, the program for establishing machine and tractor stations in Armenia has also been launched to promote, in particular, Russian agricultural machinery exports. In addition, the parties agreed to increase scientific and technical exchange, including training of agripersonnel. 
On October 25, Alexander Tkachev is going to attend the meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council.

For reference: The 17th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between Russia and Armenia recommended to establish a Working Group on Cooperation in Agriculture. The head of the Russian party is the Director of the Department of Plant Production, Mechanization, Chemicalization and Plant Protection of the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia Petr Chekmarev. The first meeting of this Working Group is planned for the eve of the Russian-Armenian Intergovernmental Commission congregation in Armenia. On agenda: bilateral trade, greenhouse facilities, scientific and technical assistance, exchange of experience in setting up the Analytical Center processing the agricultural info, aquaculture and fisheries regulations, veterinary and quarantine control, organic farming, machine and tractor stations in Armenia.
