Russia and Japan Strengthen Agricultural Cooperation
The regular meeting of the Russian-Japanese dialogue on agriculture at the level of deputy ministers of the agricultural departments of Russia and Japan Sergey Levin and Hiromichi Matsushima was held at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan. The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia, Rosselkhoznadzor, the Russian Embassy in Japan and the Trade Representation of Russia in Japan.
The participants discussed current state of Russian-Japanese agricultural relations, issues of mutual access of agricultural products to the markets of Russia and Japan as well as cooperation on joint Russian-Japanese projects in the Far East.
The Japanese side spoke about the preparation of a report on the application of the principle of regionalization in Russia on avian influenza in order submit it to the independent Animal Health Committee of Japan, which will assemble on May 21 in Tokyo, as well as the possible dates for consideration of this report. Thus, the Committee needs 1 year to make a decision, but the Japanese competent agency noted that this period could be extended.
In addition, Mr. Matsushima announced intention to complete the necessary certification procedures for two Russian finished poultry and pork meat producers (Znamensky Selection and Genetic Center LLC and Krasnobor CJSC) by the end of June 2019. These producers were inspected by the Bureau of Food Safety and Consumer Affairs of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan at the end of March 2019.
The participants also discussed recent problems of Russian producers that had been certified by the Japanese veterinary service. The Japanese side assured that it would work with the customs to solve problems of Russian exporters.
The parties noted positive developments in resolving issues of mutual access of agricultural products to the markets of both countries and the work of the Rosselkhoznadzor in this area.
Following the meeting, the dialogue co-chairs agreed to sign an interagency memorandum of cooperation on joint Russian-Japanese projects in the Far East of Russia within the framework of the G-20 Summit to be held in Osaka (Japan) on June 28-29.
